7 Homemade Seasoning Blends
Want to use more of the fresh herbs from your indoor garden every day? Want to taste the difference fresh seasonings and spices will make in your meals? Dry out your excess herbs, and create healthy, homemade seasonings that can be used on everything from vegetables to steaks. We have some great recipes below!
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Dried herbs from your indoor garden
- A spice grinder, coffee grinder, or mortar and pestle to make fresh ground spices or powders.
- Tablespoon and teaspoon measurement spoons
- Mixing bowls
- A whisk for mixing spices together
- Airtight jars or containers
If you need to try your herbs quickly, finely chop the herbs and spread them out on a rimmed baking sheet. Place the baking sheet an oven preheated to 180 degrees F. Let the herbs dry for 2-4 hours, stirring them once or twice. The herbs are fully dried when they crumble easily.
You’ll be able to store your homemade seasons for about 6 months in an airtight spice jar or mason jar. Just keep them in a cool place, out of direct sunlight. Spices may last longer, but they will begin to lose the incredible freshness and flavor that homemade, fresh spices provide.
Try these blends first, and then adjust ingredients to perfect them for your taste buds!
Mediterranean Seasoning:
- 2 tablespoons dried basil
- 2 tablespoons dried oregano
- 2 tablespoons kosher salt
- 1 tablespoons thyme
- 1 tablespoon dried parsley
- 1 tablespoon dried onion
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
Greek Seasoning:
- 2 tablespoons dried basil
- 2 tablespoons dried Greek oregano
- 2 tablespoons kosher salt
- 1 tablespoons thyme
- 1 tablespoon dried parsley
- 1 tablespoon dried onion
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon dried mint
- 1 teaspoon dried marjoram
- 1 tablespoon dried garlic
- 1 tablespoon dried dill
Italian Seasoning:
- 3 tablespoons dried Italian oregano
- 2 tablespoons dried thyme
- 2 tablespoons dried basil
- 2 tablespoons dried marjoram
- 1 tablespoon dried sage
- 1 tablespoon dried rosemary
Chili Powder Seasoning:
- 2 tablespoons sweet paprika
- 2 tablespoons garlic powder
- 2 tablespoons dried cumin
- 1 tablespoon onion powder
- 1 tablespoon dried leaf oregano
- 1 tablespoon ground cayenne pepper
*Did you know paprika is just dried, powdered red pepper pods? Usually, paprika is made with sweet red peppers, but you can use chili peppers or others grown at home as well.
All Purpose Seasoning:
- 2 tablespoons garlic powder
- 2 tablespoons onion powder
- 1 tablespoon chili powder
- 1 tablespoon paprika*
- 1 tablespoon dried parsley
- 1 ½ teaspoons black pepper

Veggie Seasoning:
- 2 tablespoons dried oregano
- 2 tablespoons dried parsley
- 2 tablespoons dried rosemary

- ½ tablespoon black pepper
- ½ tablespoon cayenne pepper
Taco and Fajita Seasoning:
- 2 tablespoons chili powder
- 3 teaspoons cumin
- 2 teaspoons cilantro
- 1 ½ teaspoon paprika (preferably smoked)
- 1 teaspoon oregano
- 1 teaspoon sea salt
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
