I recently purchased an iHarvest system. I am hydroponics gardener with experience growing crops in many different systems (e.g., Aerogarden Farm, Tower Garden, Rise, etc.). I will provide a review that compares some of the features of iHarvest with these other systems.
DESIGN. First, the design is very good. In terms of its mechanism of action, it is like a Tower Garden (which is one of my favorite systems as it is one of the most productive), if you imagine the tower portion of at a Tower Garden being cut open and laid flat against the wall. So the mechanism is a very good one for growing plants, with the added benefit of having a small footprint that you can put against a wall (I put mine in a hallway and it doesn't block passage - that's how little space it takes). The design is very well conceived, with placed in the design to store the base of the lights (so that you don't trip over them), and the timers for the pump, and the electrical wires from the lamps, so that they are hidden from view and not a tripping hazard. It's easy to assemble (takes 10 min). The plastic from which it is made makes me a little nervous that it might crack as it ages. It's not as thick as a Tower Garden. But so far, so good. I love that you can move the lights around to provide it where it might be most needed as the plants grow. Right now my plants are seedlings so the standard location (with the place in the base to hide the light base) works great. The trellis is made of plastics or some similar flimsy material, which surprised me. I expected from the color that they would be metal. I don't know how well they will cope with the weight of plants yet. But, overall, I think the design looks very appealing. I will soon have a beautiful green wall in my hallway, which will provide a beautiful sight in addition to nutrition.
GROWING. The system contains everything you need to get started right away. I recommend purchasing some covers for the plant baskets (I particularly like the ones that have a hole for the plant to poke from) - this keeps your system nice and dark to prevent algae growth in the water. What I really appreciated about the instruction manual is that it explained what the EC of the nutrients ought to be. What this means is that I am not then beholden to purchase nutrients from that company for the rest of my life. I can find it in local stores, and the EC value that I have to achieve is provided in the instruction (and the kit also includes a meter to allow you to gauge whether you have reached that nutrient level). Si far my seedlings seem to be growing well and fast, so the system is working well.
ASSISTANCE. I had a number of questions about shipping and other matters so I used the chat function on the website to contact iHarvest. Eileen responded to me within a few seconds and each time she was super helpful. Not only did she answer my question, she ensured that my special requests were handled as I asked, and she also followed up with me a week later, which suprised me - how often does customer support not only answer your questions but follows up, these days?
OVERALL. Overall, my experience is that iHarvest is a wonderful company to deal with that continues to support its customers once the product is sold. The product is well designed, is beautiful, and works well. I appreciate the fact that the instructions help gardeners find local supplies. I have some questions about how long some of the parts will last (the plastic is a bit flimsy), but the quality of the design and its functionality and its customer support outweigh those concerns for me. So far I have had no trouble with the garden and the plants are growing very well.
